Young girl is doing great after receiving a first of its kind procedure in Tampa that left her with an extraordinary arm. Watch this video to hear her amazing story.
Dr. G. Douglas Letson performed an expandable limb replacement surgery on eight-year-old Josalyn Kaldenberg in May - the first of its kind in the nation.
Josalyn and her family traveled all the way from Iowa for the surgery, after being told by several other doctors that she would have to have her arm amputated.
The procedure at Moffitt Cancer Center involved the removal of Josalyn's humerus, then a reconstruction of an artificial elbow and partial artificial shoulder joint, and finally placement of the expandable prosthesis. What makes this surgery so unique is that not only was all her cancer removed, but her prosthetic arm is custom-made and can be adjusted to grow along with her.
Silverlon® surgical dressings, shown in the video, were used to prevent infection and to accelerate the healing process of Josalyn's arm.
