Silver Dressings May Be Silver Lining to Antibiotic-Resistant Wound Infections

Antibiotics Ineffective at Treating Increasing Number of Infections

An article appeared on April 7, 2011 in Medical News Today entitled "Drug Resistant Microorganisms Getting Out of Control Worldwide."

This article cites experts from Europe and WHO (World Health Organization) who state a considerable number of infections are becoming harder to treat because of drug resistance.  According to the article, in the European Union over 25,000 patients die annually from drug-resistant infections that even our latest antibiotics cannot destroy.

On "World Health Day - 7 April 2011, "Dr. Margaret Chan, WHO Director-General, said "The message on this World Health Day is loud and clear.  The world is on the brink of losing these miracle cures.  In the absence of urgent corrective and protective actions, the world is heading towards a post-antibiotic era, in which many common infections will no longer have a cure, and once again, kill unabated."

Silver Plated Dressings Prevent and Treat Drug-Resistant Wound Infections

These facts are alarming.  However, there may be a silver lining when it pertains to antibiotic-resistant infections resulting from wounds.

Silver antimicrobial dressings with a permanent silver plated surface deliver silver ions directly into the wound effectively killing all known pathogens including MRSA and VRE.  These types of silver dressings also provide a long-term antimicrobial barrier against all known bacteria and fungi.

As antibiotics become less effective at controlling certain types of infections resulting from wounds, silver plated dressings provide a safe, simple alternative.
